Protest erupts at Music College, principal resigns within a day

By Kamini Mathai It was probably the shortest stint for a principal of the Government Music College. A Vicraman, who took over as principal on Thursday, was forced to step down less than 24 hour later, on Friday, after college teachers and students went on a strike. Vicraman is the third principal of the college in a year, after the last principal E Gayathri was promoted as VC of the newly-formed Music University which is scheduled to begin its first academic year in 2014. Perumal K, who is the joint director of the state art and culture department, has stepped in as the principal, so the college exams can be conducted on April 21. From 4pm on Thursday, after the department of art and culture announced Vicraman’s name as principal, around 100 students and 30 members of the teaching staff began protest at the college gates. The protest lasted till Friday afternoon when Vicraman finally stepped down. “We are not just protesting his induction as principal. There are many things going wrong in this college -there are financial discrepancies, issues of illegal appointments, unethical behavior by members of the administration. ” said a teacher who did not want to be named.
