Online education gets new name as popularity increases

By Chris Hottensen SIU’s online education office has a new name and is offering an expanded list of programs, courses and services. The Office of Distance Education was renamed the SIU Extended Campus in February to better reflect its expanded responsibilities. “It most certainly better represents who we are,” Gayla Stoner, director of SIU Extended Campus, said. “SIU Extended Campus is now responsible for central administrative oversight for online and our off-campus programs, as well as all the special sessions, like summer and winter sessions.” SIU’s online education has grown from four degree and certificate programs in 2011 to 21, including eight undergraduate programs, six master’s programs, four certificate programs, one certification program, one specialization program and two non-degree diploma programs. The online programs make education more accessible for students with full-time jobs or families and for professional students wishing to move ahead in their current jobs with a graduate degree. “In the last three years, we have made major strides in our offering of online programming,” Chancellor Rita Cheng said. The university is able to extend its reach further by offering classes online, enabling people who are location-bound miles away to earn a degree from the university. “We’re able to reach a new population that we haven’t been able to reach in the past,” Stoner said. More than 200 courses are listed on SIU’s online schedule this summer. Read the full article here:
